5 things to know about Portsmouth

You will shortly be in Portsmouth and we are sure you know everything about the Spinnaker Tower, Dickens’ house and the beautiful and celebrated Isle of Wight. But there are some things you won’t find on Wikipedia.
Here you can find 5 of them:

1. TATTOO MANIA

From the 16 years old boy with the skateboard to the elderly woman with a shopping bag, everybody has at least one tattoo. After all, the city was a significant naval port and there are more tattoo shops than McDonald’s. So if you wanna be trendy and cool, this is the place for you. If you are under 18, don’t forget to ask your parents.

2. HOW TO PRONOUNCE THE NAME OF THE CITY

If English is not your native language, you might have some troubles while pronouncing the name. “Mouth” in the name “Portsmouth” is not pronounced the way it should be. Practice your pronounce in front of the mirror before you arrive: English people are really gentle but they cannot stand a mispronounced word.

3. WATCH OUT FOR THE ACCENT

Before going to Portsmouth you listened to at least 178 Beatles songs to get used to the English accent. Then why a lot of people sound Polish? Don’t worry, it’s just their really thick accent. It’s only a matter of time: pretty soon everybody will sound like Sir Paul Mccartney in Yesterday.

4. OH, THIS IS ELEMENTARY, MY DEAR WATSON

Rumour has it that Arthur Conan Doyle created his famous character during his stay in Portsmouth. So in the rainy evenings grab your raincoat and go searching for the ghost of Sherlock Holmes.

5. IT’S SHOPPING TIME!

If you think shopping can really put you in a good mood, Commercial Road is the ideal place when you wake up grumpy.
From the tasty teabags to your favourite shoes, everything is here to make you feel like Alice in Wonderland.
One piece of advice: pay attention to the change or you will spend all of your savings.
